It is located 50 miles south of Italy. The country is 122sq miles which is 10 miles smaller than Las Vegas, Nevada. Malta is small enough that you may not have realized its importance to world history. Its location has given it great importance as it has been ruled by various leaders such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St. John, and many more. King George VI even awarded the George Cross to Malta in 1942 for Malta’s great bravery in World War II. This is why the Cross is on Malta’s national flag. It wasn’t until 1964 that Malta gained independence from the United Kingdom and then became a republic in 1974. The official languages of Malta are Maltese and English. Maltese is very unique in that it descends from the Arabic that developed in Sicily between the 9th and 12th century. It evolved independently of Arabic and became Latinised over the years. Its population as 2015 is about 432,000 people. Malta is a popular destination for tourists mostly for its historical monuments and structures. Its beautiful views and crystal clear water surrounding the island make it a wonderful place to visit. The clear view of the crystal sea surrounding the island is also appealing. Valletta, which is Malta’s number one destination, is the shining star. Its 16th century buildings are in wonderful condition. The shocker? Valletta is hardly 1000ft across. So much to see in such a small area! #9 Maldives The Maldives is a South Asian country located in the Arabian Sea. What is so unique about the Maldives is that it’s made up of 26 atolls that spread out over the sea. Because of this, it is one of the most widely dispersed countries in the world. The name Maldives could literally translate into garland or necklace islands. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef that encircles a lagoon partially or completely. There are 26 of these in the Maldives that separate the islands. It isn’t just widely dispersed, but it is also the lowest country in the world as far as elevation goes. Even its highest point is the lowest. The average height is around 5 feet above sea level, and the highest point in the entire nation is just under 8 feet (about 2.4 meters). One of the most highly sought after experiences in the Maldives is their adventure tourism that offers tourists a chance to swim with sharks, manta rays, and other sea creatures. Islam was adopted in 1153 and the islands were under the Sultan of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). While it used to be considered an isolated nation with an authoritarian government, it has now become one of the top luxury travel destinations in the world. Population? About 409,000. #8 Saint Kitts and Nevis The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country in the West Indies. Again, this country may seem unimportant but it has been called "The Mother Colony of the West Indies" and is in fact the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Nevis was originally called San Martin by Christopher Columbus in 1493.Columbus originally named the island after his patron saint, St.Christopher. It isn’t known who changed the name to St. Kitts and Nevis. Its area is about 269k2 (104 m2) Currently the population is around 55,500. Tourists are attracted to Saint Kitts and Nevis for its nature. Many believe the combination of the mountainous beauty and majestic sea is beyond is the perfect paradise. From botanical gardens to beautiful beaches, Saint Kitts and Nevis are one of a kind. But their most popular attraction is their national park. Besides natural wonders, this park is full of barracks and other military defenses from centuries ago. The French, Spanish, and the Kalinago people all built barriers and other military structures here and many of them still stand today. Like many of the surrounding islands, St. Kitts was formed by volcanoes, the tallest thought to have erupted some 200 years ago.

Very few people have ever been to these 13 crazy remote places it shocking how secluded these cities and towns actually are. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 4. Grise Fiord If you were ever looking on the globe or google earth at the islands in Northern Canada and wondered if people actually live there, the answer is yes and Grise Fiord is probably one the most shocking examples. Located within the Nunavut Territory of Canada, it’s certainly one of the coldest inhabited places on earth, with a yearly average temperature of -16.5 degrees C and the northernmost settlement in Canada. Not too surprisingly, the population here seems to be steadily declining and only houses 150 permanent residents. No connecting roads means the only way to connect to the outside world is by airplane. Due to the difficulty of getting products to this isolated community, prices are much higher for everyday items and it’s like this for much of the Nunavut Territory. In this photo we see a gallon of milk here priced at an outrageous 10 canadian dollars in the capital city of the Inuit Territory, Iqaluit 3. La Rinconada, Peru The highest permanent settlement in the world would be La Rinconada, located near the border of Bolivia in the Andes Mountains. Situated 16,700, or 5100 feet above sea level it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most isolated communities in the world. In this photo, you see a giant glacier known as, Bella Durmiente or Sleeping beauty looking down upon the city. With over 50,000 inhabitants, it’s not necessarily a small city community. If you’re thinking about visiting this place though, think again. There are no hotels and no hospitals! The community also lacks police and government presence as well. Built as an unregulated gold mining town, it’s home to some of the most brutal living conditions imaginable. Many visitors would suffer from altitude sickness, but with the lure of striking it rich with gold, people have found a way to adapt to the environment. Although this might look somewhat like a picturesque city, the lake in the background you see is heavily polluted with mercury and cyanide. Pollution is a serious issue here and will most likely be the city’s downfall in the future. 2. Longyearbyen- Long- yay-er-bine Just by looking at Svalbard on a map you can probably guess that it’s isolated. The largest settlement and administrative capital of Svalbard, Norway has a population of 2,100 residents. It’s the northernmost settlement with over 1000 residents in the world and was nearly destroyed by the German Navy during World War II. It’s located 1,269 miles or 2042 kilometers north from the Norwegian Capital of Oslo, making it a tad difficult to govern. Here in Longyearbyen, snowmobiles are actually the prefered method of transportation. A few ships will transport coal from this archipelago and with a few flights from Oslo and Russia each day, Longyearbyen keeps contact with the outside world. The city is so north, that sometimes during certain months, the sun will never rise and even sunlight during midnight! 1.Tristan da Cunha This island gets the nickname as the most remote inhabited island in the world because it sort of is. Tristan is the tip of a volcano thrusted upwards from the ocean floor and by looking at the signs, you’ll definitely feel a long ways away from home. The elevation peaks at 2000 meters or about 6500 feet. The closest land mass is Saint Helena only about 1500 miles or 2400 km away. It seems to be situated directly between the southern tips of Africa and South America and is only accessible by navigating the brutal seas . You might imagine that life on the world’s most remote island is a little bit rough, but people here enjoy a good standard of living here. Crime seems virtually nonexistent on the biggest settlement called Edinbourgh of the Seven Seas. Many family owns potato patches to grow there own food. Despite the good quality of living an active volcano constantly threatens to destroy the city and almost did in the 1960’s. It’s not just people living here, the local rockhopper penguins are extremely popular among those who are somehow able visit this isolated community.

5 – San Marino - 61 km² San Marino is a tiny country 61 square kilometers in size that is completely surrounded by Italy. It has a population of 32,000 people, one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, no national debt and more cars than people. It’s located two and half hours drive south of Venice near the coast of the Adriatic Sea. San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world. San Marino is also one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita. 4 – Tuvalu - 26 km² Tuvalu formerly know as Ellice Islands is located between Hawaii and Australia. It’s total land mass is 26 kilometers squared, when viewed from above is essentially the ring of a large underwater land mass that hasn’t quite breached the surface yet. Tuvalu has a population of 10,650 people which come from Polynesian descent. Most of the people live in Funafuti and the surrounding connected land to it. The traditional foods eaten in Tuvalu are pulaka, bananas, breadfruit, taro, coconut and seafood. Locals often catch flying fish on a boat with a spotlight and a butterfly net. 3 – Nauru - 21 km² Nauru is a tiny island off the coast of Australia being only 21 square kilometers in size. It is the smallest island nation in the world but not the smallest country. It was once one of the richest countries in the world back with the boom of Phosphate mining in the 1970’s. Most of the phosphate is gone now and since the country has struggled until Australia started up a detention camp on the island. The camp itself has created over 100 jobs as well as helping all the local businesses. Before the camps were setup the unemployment rate was around 90%. This was due to the country being so rich from mining that wealth was distributed and the people of Nauru no longer felt the need to work. This had an extra effect of people no longer, fishing or gardening and became very sedentary. Soon followed as the importation of western food which has lead to 97% of the population being overweight or obese. Now over 40% of the population suffers from type 2 diabetes. 2 – Monaco - 2 km² Monaco is an incredibly tiny country only 2 square kilometers in size located on the south western tip of France. It is bordered on 3 sides by france and 1 side by the Ligurian sea. Monaco is known for 2 things really, first gambling. There are 5 casinos in Monaco, 3 of which have been featured in 3 different James Bond movies. Secondly Monaco is known for the annual Monaco Grand Prix race which runs through the narrow streets with tight turns at high speeds. Most of Monaco’s 36,000 residents are millionaires and billionaires with only 1/5th the population actually born there. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy dating back to the 1300s. It is run by the Grimaldi family, the oldest ruling house in Europe. 1 – Vatican - 0.44 km² The Vatican is the smallest country in the world at only 0.44 square kilometers. Located in the city of Rome, the Vatican is known for having the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican also has the smallest population of any country in the world at 842 people. That includes over 100 swiss guards, cardinals, clergy and one nun. The bulk of the population live abroad in diplomatic positions around the world. The swiss guard, you know those guys in fully looking jester outfits, were hired in 1506 to protect the pope and has been this way ever since. Benito Mussolini signed the papers in 1929 allowing the Vatican to be it’s own country. Along with it’s freedom they were given 92 million dollars (around 1 billion dollars today). The Vatican GPD ranks 18th richest in the world which primarily comes from donations from Catholic churches, souvenirs, stamps, collectables and museum tour fees. For many Pacific island nations climate change is not a problem of the future, it’s current reality. Kiribati has become famous for buying land in nearby countries preparing to resettle its population facing submergence in a policy they call “migration with dignity.” Fiji is dealing with climate-influenced diseases such as typhoid and dengue fever. King tides in the Marshall Islands destroy crops and submerge land on a regular basis. These nations may be small, but they the threat they are under is immense. Their leaders are heading to the UN climate talks with demands for change from the rest of the world. Scientists who contributed to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimate that global sea levels have risen by about 19 centimetres (7.5 inches) since 1900. They say the levels are rising faster than average in the Western Pacific; ocean currents, winds and the gravity are all contributing to the uneven rise in this part of the world. A major goal of the UN talks is to limit global warming in air temps to below 2 degrees Celsius. But Pacific island leaders say are pushing for a lower target of 1.5 degrees Celsius. They’re also raising questions about international responsibility and justice. The Pacific region is only responsible for a tiny fraction of greenhouse emissions, but is directly impacted by the effects of larger industrialized nations’ development and population growth. Are these talks enough to save drowning Pacific island nations, or is the region as we know it doomed? On today's episode, we speak to: Anote Tong President, Kiribati Xiuhtezcatl Martinez @earthguardianz Indigenous climate change activist earthguardians.org Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner @kathykijiner Poet, environmental activist jkijiner.wordpress.com Fenton Lutunatabua @350Pacific @fentonlutun Pacific Communications coordinator 350.org Follow The Stream and join Al Jazeera’s social media community: This episode’s story: http://stream.aljazeera.com/story/201... Top 10 Richest Caribbean Countries/island Of 2017, this is the list of the richest countries based on their GDP. With summer approaching, many of us are dreaming of the soft sandy beaches and shining blue shallows promised by sunny Caribbean islands but for some lucky people, these exotic islands are home all year round. Made up of over 700 islands, reefs, islets and cays, the Caribbean promises a variety of treasures both on and off its shores. It seems that these islands are so relaxed their almost cut off from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. This impression of seclusion is largely a tourist-friendly illusion, however; the Carribean plays more of a role on the world stage than holiday-goers may expect.
